New Year’s Resolutions are always those notions that are good in the moment but hard to actually follow through with for a significant amount of time. Meanwhile, 77 per cent of people who made resolutions only stuck to them for one week! This article is for the people who set goals and have trouble accomplishing them, specifically when it comes to healthy eating. This #FoodieFriday segment is highlighting healthy (and easy) ways to make your New Year’s Resolutions a reality because we know 2020 is YOUR year to shine!

Dear breakfast skipper…

One of the main reasons why people don’t follow through with New Year’s Resolutions is because developing a new routine is hard and often times, life gets in the way. Between having a work and social life balance, it’s hard to maintain a healthy diet, especially when you’re an on-the-go type of person. The best tip to give to the on-the-goer is stop skipping meals! I’m not saying spend all of your time meal-prepping but what I am saying is take an extra 10-15 minutes in the morning and make something. Quick meals can be prepped the night before and heated in the morning or just a simple oatmeal or cereal option. Breakfast is essential. It is the most important meal of the day and starts your metabolism. Pack healthy snacks such as granola bars, nuts or chopped vegetables and fruits for snacks in between meals and try not to have your dinner past 7:00 p.m. It’s better for your digestion and this will leave you more time during the week to stay on top of planning and packing lunches for work during the week.

Stay Hydrated

Water, water and more water. People should be drinking at least two litres of water per day according to health authorities. This part about a healthy diet is something that a lot of people lack because they are not drinking enough water throughout the day. One tip to achieving maximum hydration while at home and in the workplace especially is having a reusable water bottle handy at all times. Leave one on your work desk to ensure you’re drinking water throughout the day. While at home, carry one around the house or leave it beside your bed. The amount of water you intake effects your energy levels throughout the day. If you are full of energy, you can even squeeze in a workout after work.

Motivated mind = motivated body

It’s time to get moving. If you want to reach maximum results for your New Year’s Resolution, you may have wondered how to maintain going to the gym.
Once again, starting a new routine is hard, but here’s how you can do it:

  • Setting alarms in your phone to prompt you to workout. For example, if you finish work at 5:00 p.m., set an alarm for 5:15 p.m. on days you would like to workout so you remember to head to the gym on your way home from work.
  • Leave a set of workout clothes in your car so you can go straight to the gym after work.
  • Put your workout days in your calendar.
  • Surround yourself with your goals. Follow certain fitness accounts on Instagram, talk to people who you know that work out a lot, ask them to provide you tips, etc. It is important to surround yourself with the positive motivation you need in order to achieve the goals you’re setting for yourself.
  • It’s always easier with a partner or in a group. Starting a fitness class or working out with other people definitely makes starting the routine seem less like a routine and more like a social gathering. You can build off of each other and motivate one another to continue.
